Still Life in Spain

A series of still lifes photographed during my sabbatical in Madrid in 2024. The prompt of ‘still life’ was inspired by Spanish artist Isabel Quintanilla, whose retrospective at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza introduced me to her intimate realism: portraits of her partner at work, a flower in a vase, the quiet details of home. In my own life, still life became a way of noticing the everyday as I attempted to make a home in Madrid and build a foundation with my partner. Photographing became both a practice of intimacy and a way of grounding myself in place, capturing traces of the ordinary and the tender. Photographed on a Canon EOS Elan 7 with Kodak Gold.

This series is part of a broader ongoing practice of witnessing life through film, explored in ‘Selections from Ongoing Film Practice.’
